JOY FOR LIMONDS

Father and son post impressive victories, writes Allan Payne

IAIN WILSON returned to the Normandy Hotel with The Limond Show, a rare occurrence where father and son competed on the same bill.

Headliner Willie Limond boxed in his fourth decade against Yorkshire’s CJ Wood.

Despite being 43 years old, the Glasgow boxer was punch perfect, picking his shots nicely and dodging most of what came back. A big right hand sent CJ into the ropes, dazed and legs stiffened. The busy referee for the night, Kevin Mcintyre, stepped in at 2-20 of the third round. Fans roared with delight, knowing they had just witnessed the former British, Commonwealth and European champion have his arm raised for the last time.

Glasgow’s Jake Limond entered the ring, clearly pumped by the cheers and ready to carry on the Limond legacy. He faced Worcestershire’s Michael Mooney and with corner instructions from Anthony Crolla he fought a fast tempo, producing flashy combinations, to win a shutout across four.

Martin Harkin and Edvinas Puplauskas

produced the fight of the night – a rematch of their 2017 encounter – as they traded huge shots for six rounds. The Lithuanian’s recent form suggested a new desire to win and this was no different as he launched at the Dumbarton boxer from the opening bell. Harkin’s cleaner work, grit and two knockdowns (in rounds two and five) was enough to ensure he got the 56-54 win.

Cardonald’s Josh Campbell dominated and dropped Lancashire’s Naeem Ali with a beautiful uppercut in the second, leading to a 40-35 points win.

Glasgow’s Jack Turner stalked and punished Ukrainian Stanislav Bilohurov

to walk away with a 40-36 win. Brett Fidoe

made the trip from Worcestershire for his 91st contest taking on Falkirk’s Kaiden Mcguire.

His experience was too much for the home fighter as he caused the upset with a 40-37 decision.
