SHARP BLUNTED

★★★★★ WHOLE SHOW

A SECOND south Yorkshire show in 24 hours and the second on successive weekends to be held in the Platinum Suite at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium saw all four bouts going the distance.

Nominal bill-topper was a six in which Sheffield’s “Vanilla Gorilla” Callum Beardow, urged on by a small army of supporters, proved too much for Middleton’s Darryl Sharp who, now operating up at cruiserweight, is closing in fast on his 100th paid contest. Referee for the night Jamie Kirkpatrick had scant need to double check his arithmetic at the finished and scored 60-54.

Popular Armthorpe lightweight Josh Padley had taken all six rounds when he and Seaham battler Jordan Ellison first exchanged pleasantries just prior to the start of the lockdown and he completed the double here by taking the 59-55 decision of Mr Kirkpatrick. Just a week after claiming a draw on the road at Leeds, Jordan seldom looked like repeating the feat and though he came on towards the finish by that stage he trailed by too wide a margin for it to matter.

Having shifted a fair few tickets, Sheffield first-timer Thomas Crowder had a healthy-sized crowd yelling him on against Leicestershire’s heavier George Rogers and whilst he looked to have done more than enough to take the opener what followed was a good deal closer with the as yet winless Rogers giving as good as he got for long periods.

The Preston official had Thomas, who in an at times scrappy encounter picked up a cut between the nose and the left eye, nicking it 39-38 at the finish a decision which didn’t particularly impress the visitor.

Opening contest of the night saw Sheffield southpaw Sam O’maison back punching for pay for the first time since being outpointed whilst challenging for the English superlightweight title back in July 2019. A 40-36 victory was his reward at the culmination of a four against Cameroon born Serge Ambomo, who only really came to life as the final bell approached.
