SINGH MAKES IT FOUR

But Zulgis pushes him all the way, writes Simon Euan-smith

BALRAJ SINGH made it four straight wins by outscoring Basildon’s determined Kristaps Zulgis over six competitive rounds at the Circus Tavern, referee Mark Bates scoring 58-56.

Latvia-born Zulgis came to win, causing minor damage to both Singh’s eyes and hitting back whenever he could, and certainly outpunched Singh [pictured] in a hard-fought last round. But generally Singh (Seven Kings) picked his shots more effectively and was a shade more accurate.

Lorenzo Grasso (Harrow) outscored Carl Turney (Bognor Regis) over six, referee Lee Every scoring 60-54.

Grasso used his height and reach advantages, scoring well at long range. Turney did his best to come inside, raised bumps under both Grasso’s eyes and came back gamely after being caught – such as when he was trapped in a neutral corner in the fourth and took several heavy shots to the body. But Grasso was always in control.

Southpaw Alex Cole

(Faversham) made a winning pro start, beating Middlesbrough’s CJ Wood

over six. Referee Bates scored it 59-55.

Quickest winner of the night was Dover’s Spencer Oakman, who despatched Irlam’s Ryan Hibbert in just 1-45 of a scheduled four. Oakman was on the attack from the outset, and finally a left-right to the head put Hibbert down for the count. Mr Every refereed.

Four more fighters made their debut in fours on this Victor Smith Promotions bill. Hackney’s Thomas Galbraith well outpointed Josh Cook, referee Bates scoring 40-36. Southpaw Ryan Ayton triumphed over Swindonbased Romanian Constantin Radoi, who made a spirited effort in the last round but otherwise was generally outworked. Mr Every scored it 39-37. Fellow-portsider debutant Isaac Fletcher, a Jamaican based in Camberley, was KOD in the third by Brixton’s Alfie Porter.

Porter raised a swelling under Fletcher’s right eye, and finally dropped him with a right to the head. Fletcher was up at nine but unsteady, and Mr Bates counted him out after 2-39.

And other than in the last, Luton-based Zimbabwean Darryl Tapfuma was generally coming second against Chatham’s Robert Caswell, Mr Bates scoring 39-37.

Chatham’s Gilbert Jonas (Gilbert Onyenani) beat Staniforth’s Jack Bray over four, referee Every scoring 39-37.
