U18 Combination Cup final joy for Cribbs and Chew Valley

-

THE Bristol Under-18 Combination finally completed its 2019-20 season with the cup and plate finals both played last Sunday.

In the cup final at Cribbs FC, there was a 3-1 victory for Cribbs against Stoke Lane Tigers .

Cribbs scored in the first minute, and struck again 10 minutes later when a mixup between the goalkeeper and a defender resulted in the latter back-heading the ball into the net.

The game then entered a period where both teams had attacks which were adequately dealt with by the defences.

As half-time approached, Stoke Lane’s Oakley Dawes pulled a goal back and the teams went into the break with the score standing at 2-1 to Cribbs. There was nothing to choose between the sides in the second half, but Stoke Lane’s hopes were finally dashed when Cribbs scored a third goal in the closing stages.

In the plate final at Bishop Sutton FC, Chew Valley had a 3-2 victory against Bristol Central.

The ground was in perfect condition and the pitch freshly cut. The game got underway and from the start both teams looked equally matched.

Valley settled quickly and took the lead about 10 minutes into the game.

Freddie Gwyther took a deep free-kick kick and Chew Valley defender Ben Allen connected with a great header which gave the Central goalkeeper no chance.

Valley went after a second and came close on a number of occasions. However, a long ball into Valley’s box caused a scramble and Muhammed Sulaiman, known to his team-mates as Sully, scored an equaliser for Central.

In the second half, Valley were awarded a penalty after a player broke through on goal but was pushed in the back. Gwyther stepped up and slotted it away.

Then, from a corner, Marco Madaras scored with a fantastic header to put Chew Valley 3-1 up.

Central pressed hard for a way back into the game and Sully gave them hope with a second goal.

However, Chew Valley held out for the win to be crowned plate winners.
