ARM HOLDINGS CHANGES HANDS

ONE of the jewels in the UK tech world’s crown has changed hands again.

ARM Holdings is a worldrenowned designer of computer chips with its work licensed by many of the biggest names in tech.

One of those names – Nvidia, one of the biggest graphics chip makers in the world is buying ARM for an incredible $40bn.

At the moment ARM is owned by Japanese conglomerate Softbank, which bought the Cambridge-based company four years ago for $32bn.

Back then there were concerns that the future of ARM as a UK-based company would be under threat, but Softbank made promises that it wouldn’t and has kept its word.

Nvidia has made the same pledge, at least in the short term, suggesting, too, that it may invest in the site and bring more jobs to the UK.

Even so, ARM is such a big deal in the tech world, and so important to the UK’s place in it, even the founders of the company have expressed reservations about the sale.

The Government has said, when asked by Labour, that it has no plans to block the deal.
