Tributes flood in to ‘true gentleman’ and Rovers legend

-

TRIBUTES have poured in following the death of Gordon Bennett, a devoted Bristol Rovers supporter and long-time servant to the club, writes Sam Frost.

Bennett, pictured inset, held many roles with the Gas, rising up to the boardroom after becoming a prominent figure among the fanbase.

His death was announced in a statement by Plymouth Argyle, another of his former employers, on Thursday evening.

Bennett’s love for the Gas stretched so far that upon winning a competition for being England’s best football supporter, he donated his prize money to the club.

He became Rovers’ youth development officer in 1974 and spent 12 years with the club, later serving as secretary and chief executive. Bennett steered the club through immense uncertainty as they left Eastville and moved to Twerton Park in 1986, being described as the “fans’ mouthpiece” by HTV upon his departure to West Bromwich Albion, where he was secretary.

“The club was saddened to learn of the passing of our former chief executive, Gordon Bennett,” a Bristol Rovers spokesman said. “Bennett was a devoted Rovers fan and undertook many roles around the club before taking on the role of chief executive.

“His enthusiasm for Rovers will be remembered fondly by supporters. Our thoughts and condolences are with Gordon’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Rovers legend Ian Holloway, who was mentored by Bennett as he came through the club’s youth ranks, took to social media to pay tribute.

“Goodnight Mr B, you were an inspiration and helped me make my dreams become reality,” he tweeted. “I will be always be grateful to you. A great man and a true gentleman.”

Gas CEO Martyn Starnes said Bennett “will be remembered as well-respected part of Bristol Rovers history”.

Rovers’ manager Ben Garner added: “I didn’t know him but what I have learned is he was very well respected and well-loved by a lot of people at the club.

“Our sympathies and condolences go to his family in this difficult time.”

Bennett also took up roles at Plymouth, Norwich City and Aberdeen, with friends and colleagues from across the game penning messages of thanks.

His love for the game did not subside following his retirement, collecting memorabilia and orchestrating programme fairs.
