Couple turn front window into art gallery in bid to bolster sales

-

A BRISTOL couple who run an independent creative business are using the front window of their family home to sell their artwork in the absence of Christmas markets.

Robin and Emma-Jane Richards, of St John’s Lane in Bedminster, usually sell prints, calendars, cards and mugs at markets across Bristol during the festive period.

But that will not be possible this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, causing the couple – who operate Bemmie together – to miss out on income when they desperately need it.

Emma-Jane had hoped to return to employment this year after being out of work raising their daughter for a few years, while Robin’s work in the design industry has been slashed due to the pandemic.

Robin, 40, said he hopes the display will add some festive cheer to the area as well as bolster the couple’s financial situation.

“We’re not in a desperate financial situation just yet but we could well be in a few months’ time,” he said.

“We’re aware many others are in the same boat as us too.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to sell a few bits and bobs to support the family, as well as add some muchneeded colour to the road in what has been a dark year for everyone.”

The idea of showcasing their creations in their living room window came to the couple when it became apparent Christmas markets would not run this year, and they got to work on creating their makeshift gallery.

“When we realised markets would be cancelled this year we had a think about how we could sell our products,” added Robin.

“While we don’t have any real marketing budget to promote our business, what we do have is a front window on a main road.”

Robin said people can either order artwork from Bemmie’s website for delivery or knock on the door of the family home to enquire about purchasing something on display in the window. He hopes the pop-up roadside gallery will encourage people to purchase Christmas gifts from independent producers across Bristol, rather than from major retailers.
