Starnes: We’ll keep pressing for the safe return of fans
MARTYN Starnes says Bristol Rovers are “pressing the authorities” to allow fans to return to the Memorial Stadium as soon as possible after it was announced the city will face Tier 3 Covid-19 restrictions.
The new rules will come into force on December 2 when the national lockdown ends, with Bristol among cities to be placed into Tier 3, the strictest restrictions in play to curb the spread of coronavirus.
Yesterday’s announcement is a blow to hopes that supporters could return to the Mem next month, with clubs in Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas allowed to host 4,000 and 2,000 fans at games, respectively.
Rovers supporters have not been allowed into the Mem since the 2-0 win over Sunderland on March 10.
Prior to the lockdown Bristol was in Tier 1, but case numbers have surged during the second wave, and despite a decline this week, the rate per 100,000 people remains well above the national average.
“We are naturally disappointed by today’s news, with Bristol placed in Tier 3 restrictions to combat the spread of coronavirus, meaning that we’re unable to welcome back supporters at this stage,” Starnes told the club’s website.
“Over the past few months, we
have been working hard on a fair and transparent plan, to allow the safe return of fans to matches at the Mem.
“We are pressing the authorities to allow us to at least accommodate all of our season ticket holders as soon as possible, but it’s almost certain we will need to stage one or more test events at a lower capacity before that will be permitted.
“As we get towards a point in time where restrictions are eased in the Bristol area, we will be issuing guidance to season ticket holders and the wider fanbase on the protocol and procedures that will be placed upon us for home fixtures.
“However, supporters can expect a number of changes to the usual matchday routines in order to enjoy live football again in accordance with health and safety regulations.
“These changes are likely to include a move to tickets being issued via the ‘Print at Home’ option and fans having to agree to a code of conduct before entering the ground, as well as face masks having to be worn.
“In the meantime, I ask all supporters to continue following the Government’s Covid-19 guidelines, to help prevent the spread of this awful disease.”
