Brislington Reserves miss chance to go top of Senior Division

- Derek CUMNER postsport@b-nm.co.uk

THE return to local football after a four-week lockdown ended in disarray because of total confusion at either the Football Association or the Government.

As a consequence, only four games went ahead in the Suburban League.

In the Senior Division a victory for AFC Brislington Reserves would have taken them into pole position but they lost 3-2 to mid-table Ashton United . Tom Morgan (2) and Jack Thorley scored for Ashton. Great credit must go to the two secretaries, Tony Mattock and Jeff Forste,r who not only arranged for the game to be brought forward but on Saturday changed the venue because Ashton’s pitch was unfit.

In Division Three, leaders Bedminster Down opened a fourpoint lead at the top, although they have played three more games than second-placed Rockleaze Rangers C, after they beat Wessex Wanderers Reserves 2-1. Matt Wood scored both Bedminster goals, while Suleyman Mohammed struck for Wessex.

George Bailey-Thompson struck his first goal for the club to help Brandon Sports to a 3-2 win at the South Bristol Sports Centre against Ashton FC in a hastily-rearranged game. Steven Jewry and Connor Bodnarazek were also on target for the Sports

The points were shared in the only game in Division Four between Eastville Rangers and Kellaway Rangers .

Jack Higgs was the Eastville marksmen.

Bristol’s Tier Three status under the Government’s coronavirus rules has badly affected local football. As a consequence, no games were played last weekend in the Downs League, the Churches League, or the Bristol Premier Sunday League.
