The result was all that mattered given our injury-hit squad

- Matthew Withers

THE record books will show a win and three points. It won’t show anything about the opposition’s league position, our performance or the entertainment value and for me the most important thing on Saturday was the result.

On the back of three defeats it was vital we got back to winning ways, irrespective of how well we played. Don’t get me wrong, I want to see us playing the front-foot attacking football that Dean Holden has referenced, but our squad is beyond bare bones, we are into the calcium and marrow and we just need to do all we can to stay in touch with the play-off positions until we can get some of our injured players back. When we do, I expect to see a considerable improvement.

I know there are a lot of fans unhappy at the performances and I can understand that. But you just can’t ignore the fact our small squad of fit players are being asked to put in a huge effort, and as fans we don’t know just how many of the players available are carrying knocks and niggles.

Case in point was match-winner Famara Diedhiou. I questioned why Famara did not start the game, only to find out in Dean’s post-match interview that our Senegalese frontman has a groin strain and could only really manage 20 minutes.

We also lost Callum O’Dowda (hamstring) and Zak Vyner (back) to further add to our woes. All clubs are being impacted by the schedule and with injuries, but I honestly don’t believe there is another club suffering as badly as us.

Do I expect the team that took the field on Saturday to pass and retain the ball better? Absolutely! I’m not glossing over what I am watching but I am making allowances for it, rightly or wrongly.

Many fans will have expected us to roll Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers side over but they are no mugs, only Blackburn Rovers have really put the Chairboys to the sword.

They have been in most games, having lost by the odd goal to Norwich City, Reading and Bournemouth and having earned respectable draws against Watford and Brentford.

A win is a win and will hopefully it will give the players extra confidence for tomorrow’s trip to Luton Town. We just have to hope that both Vyner and O’Dowda can make it, but I suspect both will be ruled out.
