Football I need to contribute more goals, says Robins striker Martin

-

CHRIS Martin hopes to end 2020 on a high when he returns to his old stomping ground of Kenilworth Road with Bristol City tonight.

Martin, fresh from scoring in Boxing Day’s 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers, will be looking to strike again when City take on Luton Town.

Martin was a key performer in Saturday’s victory, winning 11 of City’s 37 aerial duels on top of his goal to earn an Opta match rating of 8.90. Those are good returns for a player who will now take confidence into what promises to be another difficult test against the Hatters – who Martin represented on loan in the 2008-09 season.

“The body feels really good, fit and fresh and if I can keep contributing to the team both defensively and attacking-wise, hopefully I can continue to play as many minutes as I have done,” Martin told Robins TV.

“It will be a very tough game, just as Saturday was. They have high energy, good footballers and we know some of their players from playing with and against them before. It will be a tough proposition.

“They’ve been good at home, they’ve recently beaten top-of-thetable Norwich City at home and it is a tough place to go. I enjoyed my time when I was at the club and it’s a shame there won’t be any fans there. There are fond memories from my time there but we’re fully focused on trying to take the three points.”

It was Martin’s header which opened the scoring against Wycombe on Saturday, which was his third goal in all competitions this season. The striker is hungry for more and hopes to pick up where he left off.

He continued: “For sure, I haven’t contributed enough in the goalscoring department. It’s something I’ve been working extremely hard on and think about a lot.

“When you aren’t scoring you can tend to overthink it sometimes but it can be good to analyse my positioning and I’m trying to be in between the sticks as much as I can. It bared some fruit on Saturday and I hope that can be the beginning of a nice run of form.”
