Store plans for bingo hall

-

A BINGO hall in Fishponds could close to make way for a supermarket or DIY shop.

A planning application has been submitted to Bristol City Council on behalf of Buzz Bingo’s owners which, if approved, would allow the site to be used for retail.

The attraction is currently closed because of Covid-19 and planning consultant Andrew Beard, writing to the council for operators L’Hyveuse LP, said the “entertainment economic market is subject to significant uncertainty”.

In its application it goes on to say: “The size of unit would ideally lend itself to a further food store or a DIY unit.

“Additional DIY facilities would aid the draw directly within the centre.

“The current market uncertainty over entertainment in the light of Covid-19, the pandemic and the recession, means that it is preferable to have an alternate permission in place for a retail town centre use, should the unit become vacant.

“A vacant unit would harm the vitality and viability of the town centre, which is currently strong with high occupancy, numerous national chains, and range of associated services.

“The unit already has a retail style glazed entrance.”

The planning documents on go on to say there is “no existing prospective operator” lined up for the site yet but “retail use is considered wholly appropriate” for it due to its location.

A loading bay for delivery lorries would be created at the front entrance of the unit should L’Hyveuse LP go ahead with its plans.

There would also be new cycle space provision for members of staff at the store and the public.

Two letters of objection from members of the public and one in support of the proposal have so far been written to the council.
