RESIDENTS gave been reporting a “strange” fault that led to street lights repeatedly fading on and off throughout last night.

In what seems to have been a widespread fault, people in parts of Bristol and further afield – including Manchester and Wales – reported the “unsettling” slowmotion flashing for hours in the darkness.

Several readers contacted the Post’s website Bristol Live about the issue in the early hours of yesterday and there were numerous reports from elsewhere on social media.

Dave Oliva Arbues shared a video from a residential street in Bradley Stoke, describing the “strange happenings” from his window.

Another man tweeted: “I don’t know what’s happening but all the street lights keep turning on and off for seemingly no reason. Not just my street.

“It’s kind of unsettling.” Another woman said: “Street lights are going on and off all over Bristol and as far as other areas like Swindon and London according to Facebook posts.

“Very strange, I just drove to get electric at a garage in Willsbridge and (it was happening) all the way there.”

One person tweeted just before 7am: “What’s happening with all the street lights going on and off all over Bridgend and the Valleys please?”

Another person in Wales reported on Twitter: “The street lights in our street and nearby streets are going on and off this morning.

“Not flickering but going off for 5 to 10 seconds then coming back on. Then another in the street goes off. Very odd.”

A third report on the social media site asked: “Any reason why all street lights in Bristol main road are turning off and on.”

The Post has contacted the councils seeking clarification about what caused the issue and when it will be fixed.

However, in a tweet last night, a Manchester account reported a “large fault with a substation”.

The post read: “Street lights in Salford are flashing on and off due to a large fault with a substation.

“Electricity North West are dealing. Put a bit of disco music on.”

Several Facebook residents’ groups were also flooded with confused posts about the unusual sight, including in Kingswood People

ne resident, reporting on the group, wrote: “I got it in Cadbury Heath as well so its not just Kingswood ...”

Others said they had seen the same occurrence in Hanham, Oldland Common, Warmley and Keynsham.

Another commented: “That kept coming through my bedroom blinds all night long I wondered what it was.”
