Police formally identify body found in harbour

-

THE body of a man pulled from Bristol Harbour last week has been formally identified.

Police have now confirmed the young man recovered by divers on Tuesday, May 4, is 20-year-old Olisa Odukwe.

The University of Bristol student had gone missing days earlier, with thousands of people sharing social media posts to find him.

His body was retrieved near Narrow Quay and police advised at the time that his family had been informed.

Yesterday the force confirmed formal identification has since taken place.

In a tribute last week, Olisa’s teammates at the University of Bristol Association Men’s Football Club said he was “universally loved”.

Their message shared on Instagram added: “[He was] a kind, gentle and funny character who brought a smile to the face of whoever he was with.”

The second-year mechanical engineering student, who lived in the Redland area of Bristol, went missing on Saturday May 1.

Bennett Memorial School in Tunbridge Wells, where Olisa was a pupil before he moved to university in 2019, also shared a heartfelt message in his memory last week.

A statement issued by school leaders read: “Olisa was a young man with extraordinary promise and great personal charm.

“As a school community we join Olisa’s family in mourning for him, and we pray for them and for all who feel a sense of deep loss at this tragic news.”

Bristol University has said it is supporting students and staff and anyone who needs help can reach out to its wellbeing services.

Police previously said that Olisa’s death was not being treated as suspicious.
