THIS weekend marked the 76th anniversary of VE Day, and the event was marked at Begbrook House care home in Frenchay.

The home marked the anniversary by throwing a 1940s-themed afternoon tea party. The home was decorated in red, white and blue and residents and staff dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags, and enjoyed an afternoon with music and dancing.

Wreaths were also made to lay within the home.

Head chef Lisa Jones provided a selection of freshly-baked biscuits, sandwiches, cakes and pastries, washed down with pots of tea and a celebratory glass of fizz.

Residents observed a two-minute silence and listened again to Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s iconic speech and an address from the Queen. They reminisced about their memories of VE Day and watched clips of the celebrations that took place outside

Dennis, a resident at Begbrook House said: “I remember all the family gathering around the radio to listen to Churchill’s speech and it still gives me goosebumps now, such an important date.
