Roads closed to motorists during school run

-

ROAD closures are now in force outside two more Bristol primary schools to slash traffic and pollution during peak times.

A School Streets trial scheme began yesterday outside Victoria Park Primary School in Bedminster and Redfield Educate Together Primary Academy in Redfield.

Raymend Road and Atlas Road in Bedminster, as well as Victoria Avenue in Redfield, is now closed to motorists during school run drop-off and pick-up times.

Any drivers caught breaking the rules could be issued with a fine.

Bristol City Council announced the expansion of the trial earlier this month, following two other Bristol schools that were first to start the pilot last year.

Pedestrians and cyclists are permitted access during the restricted times, but not motor vehicles, as the aim is to reduce road danger and air pollution.

Residents living within the closures will be allowed to leave their road during the restricted times, for example to go out to work in the morning, but they will not be allowed access back into the street during the prohibited times.

Exceptions will be made in some pre-agreed cases where access is necessary, the council said, as well as for emergency vehicles.

Measures will be in place for a maximum of 18 months before being reviewed.

These latest closures are an expansion of an ongoing pilot scheme in Bristol, which

began with two schools last year – Wansdyke Primary School in Hartcliffe and St Peter’s C of E Primary School in Bishopsworth.

If the trial is seen to be a success, the council will consider making the restrictions permanent.
