Only consolation is that I haven’t been paying to watch City play

-

IWROTE to you a few weeks ago stating confidently that Bristol City are an established Championship club who are finding it difficult to make that extra step up to reach the Premiership.

Unfortunately, during that time events have persuaded me to believe we are heading in the opposite direction. Since City won their first four league games this season they showed relegation form and it was only those 12 points which separated us from the bottom clubs.

Their home record is getting worse each season and this one has been abysmal. The only consolation is that I haven’t been paying to watch games when they hardly had a shot on target.

Off the field we have an owner in Steve Lansdown who has done a great deal for the club but the lockdown situation has shown that living in a tax haven somewhat defeats the object of having a local owner.

I had wondered what Jon Lansdown actually did as chairman as he seemed to be extremely lowprofile until I read that he, too, lives in a tax haven. I don’t even know who the other Board members are as I don’t hear anything from them either so I presume that Mark Ashton has been running the club for some considerable time.

It appears that Mark, like several City players, has decided that he has a better chance of reaching the Premiership elsewhere but he will have his work cut out at Ipswich Town, a club living on past glories who cant even make the League 1 play-offs.

So the owners haven’t ‘been in the building,’ the CEO is leaving it along with his Secretary so that leaves Nigel Pearson holding the fort – presumably.

My personal feeling is that the Bristol Sport project hasn’t been advantageous to Bristol City Football Club; I have supported BCFC for over 60 years and I have no affiliation to Bristol Rugby or Basketball. I don’t see Ashton Gate as a rugby stadium and I feel the rugby club are very fortunate to be playing there as they managed to lose the Memorial Stadium to Bristol Rovers in an act of piracy!

What we need at Bristol City is quality not quantity so either focus on BCFC, Steve, or sell it off to someone who will.
