Super grouper

-

GARY BARLOW kept millions of people entertained over lockdown with his Crooner Sessions, where he’d be joined online by another famous musician and they’d perform tracks together. So it’s only natural that, now we’re allowed out and to mingle in bigger groups, he’s bringing the idea to television.

The Take That star has put his own supergroup together, and they’re hanging out in a church setting – all stone columns and stained glass – to have a bit of a jam and a chat and let the tunes ring out.

Imagine Jools Holland’s Later, if it was on Radio 2.

Gary himself is on keyboards and mainly lead vocals, of course, and he’s joined by jazz supremo Jamie Cullum, who will also be tickling the ivories and singing

Soul star Mica Paris brings the harmonies and belting vocals, McFly’s Tom Fletcher and James Bay are playing guitar and singing, backed up by bassist Danya Fisher and drummer Donovan Hepburn, who’ve played with the likes of Rag’n’Bone Man, ELO and Adele.

Together, the band performs a whole load of hit songs including Hold Back The River, How Deep Is Your Love, and I Can’t Make You Love Me. They’re also joined by two special guests, Anne-Marie and Craig David, who drop in for a chat about all things music and also each perform two of their songs.

Which means yes, we get Gary Barlow singing about making love on a Wednesday. And on Thursday and Friday and Saturday, then chilling on Sunday.

Gary’s interview style might be a bit like when you were teenagers and one of your friend’s dads tried to sound cool, but this is an easy watch. And the final performance of Somebody Else’s Guy will have you singing and dancing.
