Film crews shooting at Christmas Steps for Sky drama Extinction

-

ONE of the most famous streets in Bristol city centre was taken over by a film crew shooting scenes for a highly anticipated thriller.

Businesses along the Christmas Steps were forced to close on Tuesday, as filming for Sky’s forthcoming action drama Extinction continued on the historic thoroughfare.

There was a production base and vast lighting rig at either end of the street until the shoot ended at around midnight, as well as security guards directing members of the public to take a different route.

Described as a “gripping exploration of memory, fate, and the limits of love,” Extinction is produced by Urban Myth Productions in association with Sky Studios. It follows the story of a man named George, played by Paapa Essiedu, as he relives time after witnessing the end of the world.

When George is recruited into an organisation of people who share his ability and harness it to stop global catastrophes, he goes rogue in a bid to save the woman he loves.

Unfolding over eight actionpacked episodes, Extinction is written by Joe Barton and directed by Marco Kreuzpaintner.

Alongside Essiedu, who rose to fame following his role as Kwame in BBC drama I May Destroy You, the series stars Tom Burke (Strike), Anjli Mohindra (The Bodyguard), Caroline Quentin (Men Behaving Badly), Rudi Dharmalingam (The Split) and Charly Clive (Pure).

Laura Aviles, senior film manager for Bristol City Council, said: “It’s great to welcome Urban Myth Productions back to Bristol.

“We’ve started the year on a very strong footing for production in Bristol with robust Covid-19 safety protocols in place and the Bristol Film Office team on hand to help ensure that shoots run smoothly.

“With the worldwide appetite for screen content stronger than ever, this fast-growing sector is going to be a crucial part of national and regional economic recovery and as a location, Bristol’s film friendly infrastructure is well placed to cater for that demand.”
