Mourner’s anger at cemetery state

A MOURNER says he is appalled at the state of a Bristol cemetery which had overgrown grass and weeds obscuring graves and causing visitors to trip up.

Paul Wyatt and his partner, who live in Cwmbran, South Wales, made a trip to Canford Cemetery in Westbury-on-Trym on Father’s Day to visit a loved one’s grave.

Paul says he was disgusted to see overgrown grass and weeds at the site, describing it as ‘dangerous’ as he claims visitors were tripping over.

Bristol City Council has apologised and said some areas were missed by accident with another cut due to take place this week.

“It’s depressing to see loved ones there anyway,” Paul said. “But when you see people falling all over the place, it was just horrendous.

“The site was dangerous and could cause injury to anyone visiting there.”

Paul says some visitors to the cemetery had even brought their own lawn mowers, in an effort to tidy up the site.

“I’m five foot ten and the grass was nearly reaching my chest,” he said.

“My partner was very upset.” “I wouldn’t want to see my relative in a cemetery like this.”

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “During the summer, the grass in Canford Cemetery is cut every five weeks.

“We acknowledge that some small areas of the cemetery were omitted from the last cut five weeks ago, due to an error.

“We apologise for this and any upset it has caused.

“All areas are being cut again this week and we will take steps to ensure that the whole cemetery is cut in future, in line with our grass maintenance plan.’’
