U18 Combination Olveston’s five-goal show secures Plate glory
SUNDAY saw the completion of the extended Bristol Under-18 Combination season with the final of the League Plate contested at the neutral venue of the AJN Stadium, Keynsham, between Olveston U17s and Whitchurch Sports on a day when the weather was more suited to a wet and gloomy November day than to an early summer’s day.
Olveston flew out of the blocks from kick-off with Alex Foulner finding James Worley down the left, and he charged past the defence and rolled the ball into the back of the net with only 10 seconds on the clock.
Olveston continued to play the ball around nicely, but good work from Whitchurch stifled their attacks until Charlie Moss released Isaac Flemming.
Although he was well tackled in the box, the ball fell into the path of Alex Riggs, who volleyed homefrom just inside the penalty area in the 16th minute.
The Whitchurch strikers worked tirelessly but had few opportunities, except for a quick turn and shot which saw the Olveston ‘keeper tested from distance.
At the other end, the Whitchurch ‘keeper pulled off some great saves, while excellent defence from the lads in white and blue meant it stayed 2-0 to half-time.
The second half started in similar fashion with Olveston pushing forward. After some excellent work down the right, a cross fell to Alex Riggs, who lifted the ball over the ‘keeper to make it 3-0.
Olveston broke through again in the 62nd minute when Worley
scored with a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Soon after, Olveston broke down the left again and crossed into the
middle for Jamie Stacey to stab the ball into the back of the net,
In the final 10 minutes, two good saves were required from Tom Guy
in the Olveston goal to ensure they kept a clean sheet.
The game was played in an excellent spirit by two good teams.
