BRAVE LITTLE QUILL THE MOUSE LEADS THE CHARGE OF NEW GAMES HEADING TO YOUR SONY CONSOLE
SONY’S latest State of Play proved to be a little light on new reveals last week, but it did give some updates on anticipated releases.
As expected, the live stream focused heavily on Deathloop, with nine minutes of gameplay footage from the action-adventurer showcased.
The Sony timed-exclusive is due out on September 14, and will be available only to PS5 players until September 2022, when it will be unleashed on other consoles.
Sadly missing from the show was any news about the new God of War game, or the hotly anticipated Horizon Forbidden West.
But fans did get a look at co-op shooter Arcadegeddon, and the adorable VR adventure sequel Moss: Book 2.
Here are five of the biggest announcements made.
MOSS: BOOK 2 (PEGI TBC) Release: TBC
The first Moss game was absolutely wonderful, following the adventures of the courageous young mouse, Quill.
A surprise hit on the PSVR, it left players wanting more – and that’s exactly what they’ll get in Book 2.
It was a welcome announcement in a stream light on reveals, and showed Quill facing down bad guys in beautiful gardens and a tower cathedral.
No solid release date was given, but expect it early next year.
JETT: THE FAR SHORE (PEGI TBC)
Release: Late 2021
One for sci-fi fans, the trailer for The Far Shore saw a group of aviator scientists exploring a mythical ocean planet.
Developed by small indie studio Superbrothers, the people behind Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, I was impressed with what I saw.
It was hard not to draw immediate parallels with No Man’s Sky, with the intrepid travellers roaming the alien world on foot, or blasting through the skies in a peppy little spacecraft.
But unlike that game, you’re not here to extract resources for your own ends. This game is about discovery and learning, expanding your knowledge without interfering with the planet’s natural inhabitants – think the Prime Directive in Star Trek.
It still looks like it needs a little work, but I have high hopes for this one.
DEATH STRANDING: DIRECTOR’S CUT (PEGI 18) September 24
Release:
Sony’s 2019 release Death Stranding gets a Director’s Cut this year, although it sounds more like a soft remake. Among the features being added to Hideo Kojima’s apocalyptic actioner are enhanced combat mechanics, new battles, and a racing mode.
I’m still not entirely sure what to make of the game, and was left a little cold at the thought of a version that was even longer to play through.
But this sounds quite intriguing, especially the package-firing cargo gun.
If you got the first game on the PS4, and have since bought a PS5, you’ll be able to get the full upgraded version for $10 (about £7.20).
DEATHLOOP (PEGI 18) September 14
Release:
One of the few Sony exclusives releasing this year, this promises to be lots of fun.
The action-adventurer has you playing as Colt, an assassin who finds himself stuck in a time loop.
Set in an alternate 1960s, it’s got a great retro look and feel to it – and the soundtrack is brilliant too.
The game’s publisher is Bethesda, which was acquired by Microsoft earlier this year. That means Deathloop’s PS5 exclusivity is timed, and the game will be landing on the XBOX and PCs from September 2022.
ARCADEGEDDON (PEGI 12)
Release: Early access available now
A Sony exclusive, Arcadegeddon is a co-op shooter that gave off the feeling of Fortnite.
The game is set in a super arcade, created by a local arcade owner who is trying to save his business from a faceless mega corporation.
Taking all his top arcade games, he creates a super game but hits a snag when the mega corporation hacks it and unleashes a virus.
Playable as a solo campaign, or with up to three friends, there are distinct maps – or biomes as they’re called here – that you can choose to play in.
Three of these biomes are available now through early access, which is £15.99 through store.playstation. com. That price is likely to jump once the full game is ready for release in 2022.
