Cricket Rockhampton stay on Lord’s trail thanks to Jamie hitting the stumps
THE Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Cup continues on Sunday with three quarterfinal ties.
Holders Bishopston are away to Bedminster while there are also two further all-Bristol clashes with Knowle hosting Bristol West Indian Phoenix and Stapleton home to Golden Hill.
Already into the semi-finals are Rockhampton, who on Sunday travel to Calmore Sports of Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Voneus Village Cup.
The Rams are there courtesy of a dramatic bowl-off victory away to Ynystawe after rain again disrupted this last-16 clash.
After being washed out the previous week, play was able to start on time in Swansea with the home outfit reaching a promising 217-3 in the 38th over when the skies opened.
No more play was possible, and with the need to find a winner on the day, all 22 players prepared to send down one delivery at a set of three stumps and two bails.
Incredibly, only one player Rockhampton’s Jamie Wakefield who was fourth up for his side - was able to hit the stumps, sending his side through and keeping alive the dream of a first return to Lord’s since the Rams were beaten finalists in 2013.
Calmore, incidentally, booked their place in the last eight by trumping Goatacre the week before in another tense clash. Goatacre were all out for 133 while Calmore collapsed from 92-1 to 120-8 before finishing the tie on 133-8 and progressing on fewer wickets lost.
There is one quarter-final on Sunday in the Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Trophy, with Westbury-on-Severn entertaining Pak Bristolians.
» Thornbury folded to an eightwicket reverse against Potterne in the semi-finals of WEPL’s Twenty20 Cup. Also into the final are Bath who piled up 254-7 against hosts Bridgwater who came up 69 runs short.
» Barrow Gurney breezed into the final of the Bristol & District’s Bateman Trophy with a 32-run home victory against Saltford.
Ed Holdaway dominated an imposing total of 193-6 with an explosive unbeaten 85 from 43 (six fours, seven sixes), while opener Mark Brown contributed 27. Aiden Taynton claimed 2-29 from his five overs.
It was then the turn of Frank Forge to take centre stage with a fantastic return of 6-26, also from five, to restrict Saltford to a reply of 161-8.
Dave Davies thumped 52 not out from only 28 deliveries (four fours, four sixes).
Barrow Gurney now prepare to face Pucklechurch in the final at Cleeve on August 1 (10.30am).
This game will be followed by the final of the Tony Hitch Cup, at about 1.30pm.
