Playground Hit show in hunt for volunteers for big revamp

DIY SOS is looking for Bristol volunteers and tradespeople to take part in their next big build in Southmead.

The BBC asks that those interested in helping to revamp the Southmead Adventure Playground, in Doncaster Road, get in touch by Wednesday, October 6.

The playground, known locally as the Ranch, was built by the community and has been loved and well-used by many generations of residents.

The running of the playground was taken on by Southmead Development Trust recently, a residentled charity working to improve health, wellbeing and employment; and to help keep the local community strong, resilient, and resourceful.

But, sadly, it has fallen into disrepair, suffered from vandalism, and is now unfit for purpose.

However, that is about to change as the BBC’s DIY SOS: The Big Build will galvanise volunteers and skilled tradespeople to offer their expertise and companies to donate products.

With the help of volunteers from the local community, the aim is to invigorate the Southmead Adventure Playground for future generations, to:

Renovate the dilapidated playground and add exciting new features; Re-build the burnt out ‘forest school’ shelter and clear the overgrown pond for ‘pond dipping’; Re-style the community space to include a new kitchen and games area; Re-lay the badly damaged basketball/football pitch (Multi

Use Games Area). Volunteers can register for the Trades Day next Wednesday, October 6, by emailing diysosbristol@bbc.co.uk.

The build will take place from Tuesday 19 - Thursday 28, October 2021. DIY SOS: The Big Build will

air on BBC One in 2022. DIY SOS: The Big Build is BBC One’s home renovation programme, which has been running for over 20 years.

The award-winning programme is presented by Nick Knowles, and his team of Billy, Chris and Jules, and they take on extremely Big Builds in limited time.

They rely on the generosity of the local community of tradespeople and suppliers to help transform the lives of deserving families and communities.
