Yate see off Redhill to reach fourth qualifying round

-

YATE Town progressed to the fourth qualifying round but were made to work hard by a well-organised Combined Counties League Redhill outfit who deserve much credit for their fine run in this season’s competition.

This was Yate’s third home win on the bounce and, with nine goals scored and none conceded, the record is impressive.

David Sims-Burgess and Ollie Mehew both had chances as the home side dominated the early exchanges, and a powerful drive from Jamie Adams was blocked when it looked destined to be on target.

Despite Yate’s greater possession, it was Redhill who should have gone in front in the 27th minute when Noe Vendrells headed against the crossbar from close range following a run and cross from Nathan Horgan.

Mehew continued to cause the visiting defence problems with his pace and, after doing well to retrieve the ball on the left, he provided the cross for Dave Sims-Burgess to head in the opening goal just before the break.

No one was able to put the finishing touch to a Sam King cross as Redhill attacked at the start of the second period, before Joe Tumlety blasted over the crossbar after some clever footwork at the other end and Joe Hall hit the upright after a short free-kick routine.

A second goal was needed to lift the tension and this came on 74 minutes when Hall’s low drive appeared to take a deflection as it zipped in through a crowded goalmouth.

Tumelty’s expertly flighted freekick minutes later made the tie safe, although there was still time for Mehew to shoot wide after another strong run and Hall to have

his curling effort saved by Jack Minchin in the Redhill goal.

Bath City produced a five-star display at a wet Twerton Park this afternoon to sweep aside Frome Town 5-0 and secure a place in the fourth qualifying round.

The Robins had already beaten Vanarama National League South opposition in the previous round but rarely troubled Bath in a onesided clash.

Tom Smith and Alex Fletcher had already missed good chances before the latter headed home from Elliott Frear’s 16th-minute cross.

The visitors did spurn two great chances to get back in the game

after this, Murphy Mahoney saving well from ex-Bath forward Jon Davies on 23 minutes, then ten minutes later another former Roman, George Rigg, should have levelled when sent clear on goal only to lift his shot against the post.

Six minutes later, Bath doubled their, Jack Batten heading home Frear’s corner kick. Any hopes Frome had of a second half comeback disappeared within two minutes of the restart as Frear made it 3-0 with a low shot from 15 yards. Bath were now in total control of the game and, on 64 minutes, Eddie Jones’ cross was neatly steered home by Cody Cooke. Frear and substitute Mo Touray both saw efforts hit the post before Cooke completed the scoring with seven minutes left, heading home another great Frear cross.

Weston-super-Mare went down 1-0 at National League South side Dorking Wanderers in the fourth qualifying round.

The goal came in the 14th minute from Callum Kealy, who also had an effort cleared off the line by Sam Avery shortly afterwards.

Dayle Grubb and Lloyd Humphries came close in the second half for Weston as they pressed for an equaliser.
