Another great City away-day made up for my lack of sleep

- Matthew Withers

PERSISTENT precipitation in Peterborough isn’t enough to keep persistent Bristol City down and they came from behind to win a fivegoal thriller at London Road. Credit to Patch Warner of 3 Peaps In a Podcast Bonus Show for that opening tongue-twister.

First up, I just want to wish manager Nigel Pearson all the best as he overcomes Covid-19. Hope you’re back on your feet soon Nige.

What another great away-day! I’ve said it a few times this season but the City away following are certainly seeing the best of the side this season and it would be great if everyone could see similar performances and results at home.

I had a system upgrade to support in work on Friday evening, into the early hours of Saturday morning, finishing at 5am and was then up at 7.30am to complete it before setting out for the Weston Homes Stadium, home of Peterborough United, at 9am. I have to say after only two hours sleep, I wasn’t looking forward to driving the three and a bit hours to Peterborough but was joined by Patch, Lee and Ben and the journey soon passed (although we could have done without the M40 being closed and causing a jam).

We got to the Cross Keys hostelry where I was able to meet up with my mate and Posh fan Lee, along with his partner Nicole and his son Tom and we were joined by mate Kevin and fellow reds Simon and Northern Tom and Lizzie. The pub catered especially for away fans and it was a great atmosphere.

On to the line-ups, with injuries to Han Noah Massengo, Nathan Baker, Jay Dasilva, Antoine Semenyo and Nahki Wells, it was good to see that Joe Williams was able to keep his spot after cramp in midweek and in came Cam Pring for Nathan Baker, Andy King for Tyreeq Bakinson and Callum O’Dowda for Jay Dasilva.

It was a cagey opening in terrible conditions. That man Sammie Szmodics - never given much of a chance to do it in the red of Bristol City - who got the opener with a brilliant curling shot.

However, this team has a stronger mindset than last season and with Pring and O’Dowda combining well down the City left, they created several opportunities and it wasn’t long before they were level via own goal from former Swindon Town player and City public enemy No 1 Nathan Thompson. We thought it was a Rob Atkinson bullet header, but replays clearly showed the OG for Thompson.
