Watching the (amateur) detectives

DAY

-

MURDER mystery meets game show in this slightly bizarre format that sees ordinary people play detective.

These are people who have clearly watched too much Poirot and think they could do the work of a homicide police officer.

But £50,000 is at stake for whichever pair of sleuths is first to catch the killer.

It’s no ordinary murder – it’s a murder mystery written by none other than Ian Rankin, one of Britain’s most successful crime writers.

The four teams are all whisked off

Channel 4, 9.30pm

to the crime scene, The Manse, an old rundown property on an island, where the body of Charly Hendricks was discovered a few hours earlier.

They are greeted by senior investigating officer Parm Sandhu and her two deputies, Simon Harding and Graham McMillan.

“If you fail me once I cannot trust you again,” warns Parm, who says officers should be called Sir and Ma’am. It’s all very serious.

The clues are there: Rox and Dot are one of the pairs hoping to solve the ‘murder’ and win £50,000

It starts with a tour of the crime scene, with the amateurs noting the blood smeared on the walls and footprints.

But you can’t help but laugh as they’re all later hauled in for a telling off because mates Dot and Rox stood in a pool of blood and Caroline and Chrissie accidentally touched the victim’s wine glasses.

Then it goes even more amdram as the contestants begin interviewing some ‘persons of interest’.

Clues are drip-fed throughout, and the ‘victim’ Charly narrates proceedings, with the odd flashback to the final days of her life.

This genre-busting show is on for six weeks so pay attention if you want to play along.
