‘Hidden gems’ Heritage trail celebrates links with Wurzels

THE story of Somerset music legends The Wurzels will be featured in a new heritage trail planned for a West town.

The trail is the idea of Nailsea Town Council to celebrate the ‘hidden gems’ of the North Somerset town.

The initiative will focus on 10 key locations with stone plinths with information boards on them.

Locations include the Royal Oak pub in the High Street where a statue of Wurzels founder Adge Cutler proudly sits outside.

The pub was where the band recorded their first record more than 50 years ago.

The 4ft tall statue was created by local sculptor Roy Cleeves and was unveiled by Adge’s brother Dave Cutler and his nephew John Cutler.

Adge, who grew up in Nailsea, worked at the town’s Coates Cider Factory and is buried at Christ Church after he died in a car crash in 1974, aged 42.

Plinths will also be put at Middle

Engine Pit to mark the history of Nailsea’s coal mining and at the site of the Old Glassworks in the High Street. Others will be placed at the Coates Estate to celebrate the history of cider brewing in the town and at the Tithe Barn to mark Hannah

More’s visit to Nailsea and the founding of a Sunday school.

A Nailsea Town Council spokesman said: “Nailsea has a rich heritage that some of its residents are completely unaware of.

“This project would bring our local history to the fore using a collection of matching signage at dedicated points around the town.

“It will create a trail across the town that gets people out and about exploring their local area.”

As well as the information on the plinths, there will be QR codes that people can scan to listen to an audio tour.

The tour will be told by the voices of Hannah More, Robert Lucas and other key figures in the town’s history and voiced by local actors and residents.

The town council has been working with North Somerset Council, which owns some of the sites, for permission to install the plinths.

It is hoped the trail will be in place this autumn.
