The lack of depth in City’s squad has now become alarmingly bad
THE Post quoted Nigel Pearson as saying, after the excruciating home defeat to NottsForest, that City had ‘thrown away a very, very good situation.’
I cannot agree with this statement, as a slender 1-0 lead for a team which has only kept one clean sheet all season and keeps conceding late goals to lose points is far from a good situation; a two or three goal lead is obviously required.
I believe this isn’t happening in games partly due to substitutions that are made aiming to protect a narrow lead. In the Forest game City ended it without two strikers and this just invites the opposition to pile on the pressure with no attacking outlet for City and inevitable consequences.
It seems that Joey Barton did the same thing at Colchester and I believe Gareth Southgate made similarly wrong decisions to hold on to 1-0 in the Euros final against Italy rather than being positive and going for the second goal.
In Nigel Pearson’s defence, he didn’t have another striker on the subs bench and the lack of depth in City’s squad is becoming alarming.
We have two multimillionaire owners living in tax havens, Bristol Bears lording it at Ashton Gate with an international coach and players, while it seems to me that Bristol City FC are being left to feed on scraps and loyal fans suffering from an appalling home record.
We are light years away from the Premiership, a fact highlighted by being thoroughly outclassed by Bournemouth recently. It annoys me that clubs such as Bournemouth, Brentford and Burnley are so far ahead of Bristol City in football terms when they are actually smaller clubs.
Could the answer be that none of them are part of a sports consortium and their owners have focussed their attention and their investment on the football club?
I regret to say that I cannot see
Bristol City FC progressing within Bristol sport, and I am back to the situation of hoping there are three worse teams in the Championship than us in order to avoid relegation. D Scadding
