‘There are enough flu jabs for those who need them’

-

HEALTH chiefs in Bristol have reassured residents there is enough flu vaccine for everyone.

This comes after reports that some providers in Bristol had run out of the jab, with one surgery in South Bristol reportedly being out of stock until the end of November.

A spokesperson for NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire CCG, has now said: “We are pleased local people are coming forward to take up the flu vaccine. Flu is a serious illness and the vaccine is the most effective protection against it.

“Deliveries of vaccines are phased across GP practices and pharmacy sites. Clinic appointments are scheduled around these deliveries which means that appointments aren’t available every day and sometimes appointments may need to be rearranged if delivery schedules change.

“However, there is enough flu vaccine for everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated.

“While some locations may be low on supplies now, more stock will be coming through in the coming weeks.

“If you’re eligible for the free NHS flu vaccine, your local GP will be in contact as soon as appointments are available. Alternatively, many local community pharmacies are also able to offer the flu vaccine.”

Last week, a top public health official urged people to be socially responsible and not go out if they have a bad cold as he warned health services could become overwhelmed this winter.

Dr Michael Marsh, medical director for South West NHS England and NHS Improvement, said: “Have the flu vaccine. If you do catch flu and you are mildly infected, you spread it on – don’t go out when you have a bad cold, wear a mask and wash your hands.”
