Bristol Post

Maybe move to Holland?

-

I READ with interest the letter in the Post praising the development of an underground railway system in Bristol – but however long is it going to take the overground railway network to be joined up?

We have been waiting long enough for this to happen. We certainly do not want an underground railway system in Bristol. We are surrounded by water and this would open up to massive flooding with loss of life.

Has Eric Wildman read about the floods in New York and London in their underground systems? He is writing from Madrid!

Another letter on the same day suggests we need more cycle lanes.

We do not need any more of these for cycles or the dreaded escooters. We cannot all get on a bike due to infirmity, age, or the nature of the jobs we do.

Here we go back to Holland’s cycling system! Please take a trip to Holland during the spring and visit the beautiful acres of bulb fields as far as the eye can see. It is flat, flat, flat! It could not be more different. Bristol is nothing like Amsterdam. The only flat area is the Downs!

Bristol is built on hills. I am afraid we will never be able to have a system like Amsterdam for this simple reason.

Please move to Holland if you have to have flat areas to cycle on.

Fast disappearing, almost overnight, are the last of our lovely green areas despite all the protests.

I do not hear any good news such as playing fields and youth clubs being built and organised by our mayor and council. These are desperately needed in the coming winter months to get young people using their skills and brains and give them encouragement for their future.

The mayor has changed his mind against his councillors’ wishes and the residents. What does this tell us? Did he say he was all for Green? Mary Thomas
