Angol’s late strike keeps Port Vale off top of League Two

PORT Vale missed the chance to move top of the League Two table after being pegged back to 1-1 draw with Bradford City.

James Wilson’s strike had Vale eyeing the league’s summit, only for Lee Angol to thwart those ambitions with a late header.

Exeter City moved up to third in the table with a 2-1 home win over Oldham Athletic, with Matt Jay and Jevani Brown on target for the Grecians.

Jamie Bowden hit the target for Oldham, but Exeter were able to grind out the result and extend their club-record unbeaten league run to 14 matches.

Alex Newby scored in the first and last minutes to earn Rochdale a point from a 2-2 draw with Leyton Orient. Aaron Drinan and Craig Clay struck for Orient to turn the game on its head after Newby’s opener. But then Rochdale snatched a point, courtesy of Newby’s second effort.

Harrogate beat Walsall 3-1 on the road, with Simon Power, Jack Diamond and Luke Armstrong all finding the net. Kieran Phillips scored a late consolatio­n for Walsall.

Isaac Olaofe’s goal handed Sutton a 1-0 win at Tranmere.

Conor McAleny scored to give Salford City a 1-1 draw at struggling Scunthorpe.

John-Joe O’Toole and Ryan Stirk fired home to seal Mansfield’s 2-1 win at Stevenage, who had Scott Cuthbert on target in defeat.

Early-season strugglers Carlisle ground out a goalless draw with Barrow.

» Plymouth Argyle made it 16 games unbeaten and climbed top of the Sky Bet League One table after thrashing Accrington Stanley 4-1 at the Wham Stadium.

The Pilgrims went into the break two goals to the good, thanks to an Ethan Hamilton own goal and Jordan Houghton strike just before the half-time whistle.

Accrington threatened to get back in the game when they pulled a goal back through Tommy Leigh but Plymouth went further ahead as efforts from Ryan Broom and Ryan Hardie secured the three points.

Doubles from Scott Twine and Max Watters helped MK Dons make it back-to-back league wins after they crushed Cambridge United 4-1 at Stadium MK.

Twine opened the scoring when he touched home Watters’ low delivery and, minutes later, the roles were reversed when Twine set up Watters to double the advantage.

Second-half strikes from the pair gave Dons a 4-0 lead before Sam Smith scored for the U’s.

Portsmouth made it six games without defeat in all competitio­ns as Marcus Harness’ second-half goal gave them a 1-0 win over Wycombe at Adams Park. George Hirst brought the ball down in the box and squared it to Harness who tapped home from close range.
