The Bear Pit is an example of how depressed the city looks

-

WHAT is happening to our once beautiful city? The Mayor has broken his promise to create something of beauty in the Bear Pit – this has now become an overgrown mess!

Neither he nor the council seem to have any idea what Green means.

The centre is becoming a very sad place with the added closure of all the well-loved stores.

The Bear Pit is an example of how depressed the city looks. The Mayor and the council should take a trip to Cardiff to see a vibrant city. Cardiff used to come to Bristol!

Has he seen for himself what a mess he and his councillors have allowed Horfield Common to become, covered with huge logs of chopped down trees? They must be out of their minds to spoil such a lovely green area which people enjoy.

Where has all this wood come from, because it is very green and fresh? Travellers do not use this area. They prefer messing up the Downs. Nothing ever gets done about clearing these vans away!

The three beautiful painted caravans which were recently there with their well-looked-after horses were doing no harm and brightened up the green. The logs are now an obstacle course for people and will soon kill the grass and be covered with graffiti.

Why not put some benches and plant more bulbs to brighten up the area and take the ugly logs away?

Another example of ugliness is the Brabazon site. We have wonderful architects’ pictures in the press which in reality never compare. The noise from the arena will eventually render all the residents in the new housing estate stone deaf, as well as the congestion of traffic. Apart from being deaf, they will have mental health problems from claustrophobia.

Many live in concrete jungles of high-rise flats and do not have the money to go places. We need play areas for young families to get together and benches for the elderly to sit on to watch the world go by and chat.

Perhaps the writer who calls the folk who do not have the money to get out into the country and need spaces near to home the Nimby brigade misunderstands the meaning of Green space!
