Rugby Chew enjoy try-fest at Old Patesians

-

TITLE-CHALLENGING Chew Valley eased to a 62-14 victory at bottom side Old Patesians in South West One West.

Victory kept Chew four points ahead of St Austell at the top of the table, but the Cornish team hold a game in hand.

Chew, in their first visit to Old Patesians, played down the slope in the first half, and had a strong wind at their backs.

The opening score came on 10 minutes when the Chew pack shoved Pats off their own ball and centre Joe Cowell crossed for a try. Six minutes later, full-back Miles Moorhouse crossed out wide and added the conversion to make it 12-0.

On 21 minutes, scrum-half Ben Mead collected a clearance kick on halfway and made it to the five-metre line. Moorhouse was in support and he crossed for his second try.

Cowell collected the bonus-point try on 26 minutes, cutting a line to wrong-foot the defence after another dominant scrum. Flanker Ross Harding then commited three defenders before a strong carry by second row Marc Daly set up Charles Shallcross for a try, which was converted.

The home attack was one-dimensional and picked off close in, while their backs were guilty of shipping the ball without comitting defenders.

Dean Brooker finished a move on his return as hooker to the front row, and with Moorhouse kicking the conversion, Chew had extened their lead to 36-0. That soon became 43-0 when a training ground move off a scrum on their own 10-metre line put wing Silas Cox away for a try, which Moorhouse converted.

In the second half, playing up the hill, Chew came close but the first score was a penalty try for the home side.

When a Johnny Eves offload was picked off by the Old Pats wing on 51 minutes, he had the gas to outstrip the defence and score a second try for the hosts.

However, Brooker scored at the back.of a driven line-out on 61 minutes. Then, after Stride made good ground, Webb went in under the posts from halfway. Stride added another try to seal an emphatic win.
