Mermaid’s tale: Hannah takes new book on libraries tour

-

A MERMAID from Bristol is celebrating after her second children’s book was published - and she is touring the city reading it to children in libraries.

Hannah Pearl describes herself as a “real-life mermaid”, and says that when she is not “landlocked in her day job”, she can be found in and around “our beautiful local coastlines freediving for treasure, beach cleaning and swimming in the estuary”.

The Bristol mermaid is also a children’s author, and this is her second book in the children’s picture-book series Ruby Rockpool, which features a heroine who lives in Teignmouth in Devon and is “on a mission to save our oceans and protect marine life”.

The book, which is illustrated by local graphic artist Becki Rendell, is raising funds for environmental activist charity Sea Shepherd, who said Hannah was its “favourite mermaid”.

A charity spokesperson said: “Ruby Rockpool and the Tangled Whale is a fun and colourful book with ocean conservation at its heart, educating young readers/mermaids about the issue of marine debris while inspiring lifestyle changes and care for the ocean to the benefit of marine wildlife worldwide.”

Now, Hannah is planning a tour of Bristol libraries to do a storytime reading for children.

The book is being launched at the Skyboat Cafe in Redland in Bristol next Tuesday, March 22, with further ‘mermaid storytime’ reading events coming soon to libraries in the city.

Hannah said she is hugely passionate about marine conservation and loves to talk to children and adults about what they can do to help save our oceans.

“I love to do mermaid appearances teaching kids mermaid language and best practice for being eco marine warriors,” she said.

“I created the character Ruby Rockpool as a way to bring the plight of our oceans to life and ensure future generations can help protect our marine life and ecosystems.

“It’s really important to bring awareness to the plight of our oceans to kids and adults, encouraging small changes for big impact. I wanted to spread some mermaid magic and joy to the world, which also included a message of conservation from the deep.”
