Tesco is doing its bit to fight hunger at the heart of local communitie­s across Britain this spring with its Buy One to Help A Child campaign.

Every time you buy fresh fruit and veg in-store or at tesco.com from March 21 to April 3, Tesco is pledging to make a donation to FareShare, the charity network it has partnered with for the past decade. This means you’ll be helping vulnerable children and families in your local area.

As the UK’s national network of charitable food distributo­rs, FareShare ensures that good-quality surplus food from businesses, including Tesco, is passed on to more than 10,500 frontline charities and community groups. This results in two million nourishing meals every week going to people in communitie­s across the UK.

Community organisati­on Ambition Lawrence Weston works to improve the lives of residents on the post-war Lawrence Weston housing estate on the northwest edge of Bristol. Thanks to people who live and work here coming together, many positive changes have been made, including providing nutritious food for young children and their families – most of this coming from FareShare. The service has proved to be a lifeline to many vulnerable and low-income families during the Covid pandemic.

IMPROVING LIVES

Ambition Lawrence Weston was founded in 2012 with the aim of improving the lives of local people after a decline in services in the area. The group’s achievemen­ts include preventing the closure of the local youth centre, securing millions in funding, creating an employment hub to help residents get permanent jobs, producing a quarterly newsletter and writing a neighbourh­ood developmen­t plan.

The organisati­on’s community developmen­t lead Donna Sealey, a lifelong resident of the area, says, “Ambition Lawrence Weston was establishe­d by residents who wanted to make the area a better place to live, work and play in.

“We’re continuing that work today by providing affordable and nutritious food with the help of organisati­ons like Tesco and FareShare.

“We’re very grateful to them for supporting us – the food makes such a difference to families in the area. It’s a key part of our aim to make everyone who lives here feel like part of a community that looks after one another, and is between Tesco and FareShare celebrates 10 years this year. FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell says Tesco’s donation will make a real difference to charities working with children, and thanks Tesco customers for their support.

“So many of the children that we provide food for rely on free school meals during term time, but they do not get access to these during the holidays. Supporting their needs is very important to us as we see what a difference access to healthy food can make in young people’s lives.
