WELTON Rovers emerged victorious from a dramatic finish to their Toolstation League First Division game at Hengrove Athletic to stay on course for promotion.

Toby Cole’s low left-footed finish in the 85th minute gave Welton the lead, then a few minutes later teenage goalkeeper Alfie Kelsey preserved the three points when he tipped Giorgio Mancini’s penalty round the post.

Second-placed Welton remain nine points behind leaders Sherborne, with a game in hand, after the Dorset side won 1-0 at Odd Down, thanks to an Alex Murphy goal shortly after half-time.

Third-placed Wincanton Town won 3-0 at home to Tytherington Rocks, to stay four points adrift of Weton, but fellow promotion hopefuls Warminster Town dropped to fourth after a 1-0 defeat at Bishop Sutton, who were indebted to Dan Spill’s 34th-minute strike.

Lebeq Uinted are in ninth place after two early goals from Sacha Tong, plus a stoppage-time effort from Fabian McCarthy, secured a 3-1 win across the road at Almondsbury. The home side had been given brief hope of snatching a point by Theodore Cox’s 81stminute back-post headed goal.

Oldland Abbotonians won 4-1 at home to strugglers Bishops Lydeard, thanks to two headed goals from Owen McCallum, a Cash Vinall penalty and a cracking 30-yard volley from Harry Pruett.

Goals from Ben Mitchell and Liam Oswin gave Longwell Green Sports a 2-1 win against Portishead Town on the Shellards Road 3G, while AEK Boco’s solid first season in the Toolstation League continued with a 1-0 win at Radstock Town.

Bristol Telephones eased any lingering relegation fears with a 2-0 home win against Devizes Town, thanks to goals from Joe McLeod and Jack Jones.

In the Premier Division, Clevedon Town suffered a second defeat in five days, having put together an 11-match unbeaten run prior to that, when Alex White’s team went down 3-2 at a Shepton Mallet side that registered a fifth successive league success.

Joe Morgan raced on to a fine through ball from Nathan Legge to put Shepton ahead on 17 minutes, but good work by Mitch Osmond led to a Matt Wood own goal 10 minutes later.

Morgan restored Shepton’s lead shortly before half-time when he rifled home from the edge of the area.

Josh Williams showed good pace and strength to poke the ball past Clevedon goalkeeper Luca Smith for Shepton’s third goal on 70 minutes.

Elliot Nicholson grabbed a second for Clevedon in stoppage-time when he got a touch on Freddie King’s low cross from the left byline.

Keynsham Town were edged out 2-1 at Bridgwater United after Tropy Simpson, just signed from Hellenic League Hallen, bagged an 88th-minute winner. Jacob Spence’s header from a 54th-minute corner had given Bridgwater the lead, before Keynsham levellled in the 83rd minute.

First-half goals from Shea Bennington-Mannings and Zack Ford gave Ashton & Backwell a point from a 2-2 home draw against Buckland Athletic.

Bitton suffered a fourth successive defeat but emerged with plenty of credit from a battling display in a 2-1 defeat at second-placed Mousehole. David Duru scored for Bitton.

Brislington fell behind to Josh Brace’s 10th-minute strike for Ilfracombe Town at Ironmould Lane. However, despite being reduced to 10 men by Harry Tobin’s second yellow card in the 50th minute, Brislington salvaged a point through a late penalty from Simon Prangley.

In the Hellenic League Supplementary Cup, Chipping Sodbury Town advanced to the next round with a 4-1 win at Bourton Rovers.

But it was a day to forget for Thornbury Town whose makeshfit side lost 7-0 at Malmesbury Victoria in the Challenge Cup.
