One in 3 of us don’t know where Clifton Suspension Bridge is ...

THE Clifton Suspension Bridge may be Bristol’s best-known landmark – but it turns out many people who live in Bristol don’t even know it’s in our city.

New data shows that 30 per cent of Bristolians surveyed don’t know where the suspension bridge is – and 41 per cent of Brits don’t know where it is, either.

According to online bingo company JackpotJoy, eight per cent of Bristolians asked think the iconic bridge is in the Brecon Beacons in Wales. A further six percent think it’s in Cornwall – despite its name being a bit of a giveaway as to its location.

A poll of 2,000 UK adults indicated that tens of thousands of Brits ask Google where the UK’s top landmarks can be found each month, with around 170 monthly searches for ‘Where is the Clifton Suspension Bridge?’

As well as only three in five (59 per cent) of Brits knowing where the Clifton Suspension Bridge is, nearly half of those surveyed said they have no idea where Stonehenge is located.

Perhaps more worryingly, only one in seven (15 per cent) of Brits asked are unaware that Buckingham Palace or Big Ben are in London. One in ten aren’t aware that Tower Bridge is in London either.

Just over half of those surveyed knew that the Giant’s Causeway is located in Northern Ireland.

More than one in 20 placed it in Bristol instead, maybe getting it confused with Cribbs Causeway.

Sherwood Forest is the landmark outside of London that the most adults surveyed successfully located, with 74% correctly placing it in Nottingham.

But, while a huge majority (84%) of Notts residents surveyed knew that Sherwood Forest was local to them, one in five (16%) had no clue. The poll also highlighted that age does often equal wisdom, at least in terms of geography, as millennials proved to be the least savvy age group, while those aged over 65 had the best knowledge of where most UK landmarks are located.

Alex Fagelson of Jackpotjoy said: “Looking at our survey results, we were surprised that many Brits don’t know where some of the country’s most famous attractions are.

“While it may be wise to brush up on our geography knowledge, there’s no better way to do this than heading out to see these attractions in the flesh.

“As summer approaches we can’t think of a better excuse for a fun day out!”
