COUPLE have revealed their heartbreak after their dog died after a “savage attack” from another dog in what they described as a “traumatic incident”.

Monika Douglas said Snowy was a very well-behaved dog who walked very well without a lead, adding that he was generally not very interested in other dogs and tended to just keep himself to himself.

The mum-of-two said that her husband was walking Snowy – a Maltese which was nearly seven years old – on Conham River Park when he was attacked by a Chow Chow that was being walked by a group of teenagers.

She said this happened at around 5pm on Thursday in the area opposite Beeses.

She said: “He saw a girl holding a dog on a lead so he asked if the dog was OK and the girl said that he was fine.

“He was a metre away from the dog when the dog literally lunged on him and he would not let go.

“My husband kicked the dog a couple of times and he would still

not let go.

“Eventually it let go, but Snowy got two broken ribs, multiple puncture wounds and a punctured lung.

“He lost a lot of blood and he ended up passing away last night because of loss of blood, internal bleeding and loss of oxygen.”

Her husband Matt Douglas said they reported this to South Gloucestershire Council’s dog warden and that they will be carrying out an investigation to see if there have been any previous incidents with that dog. However, he said they would not be taking the matter forward legally as Snowy was not on a lead.

“My wife is so upset,” he said. “It was such a traumatic incident to witness such a savage attack.

“To just go for it like that, I had never seen a dog behave like that. If they had not managed to separate them, he would have killed him there and then.

“It is a dreadful thing to happen. We can not bring our dog back, but if at least we can prevent something like this happening again that is all we can do, to at least get some sort of closure.

“We just hope the warden can take some action to ensure that dog is wearing a muzzle in future.”
