Man pulled samurai sword from trousers in row over swearing

AROW about bad language in front of children culminated in a man producing a samurai sword.

David Gilpin produced the blade from his trousers after the argument in Lonsdale Avenue, Weston-superMare.

It was one of a number of offences for which he appeared for sentence at Bristol Crown Court.

The 33-year-old, of Londsdale Avenue, pleaded guilty to non-dwelling burglary, two offences of handing stolen goods and possessing an offensive weapon. Judge David Evans gave him a 17-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.

Catherine Flint, prosecuting, said in April 2020 Gilpin was spotted taking goods from a home where the householder had died two days previously. When challenged Gilpin said he had permission to take the items.

Police were alerted and visited Gilpin’s home and found him in possession of a stolen lawnmower and petrol strimmer taken in other breakins.

When interviewed Gilpin said someone had dropped the items into his garden.

Miss Flint said in October 2020 Gilpin’s swearing in the street sparked an argument with a man with children. When it culminated in the pair meeting to “sort things out”, Gilpin was said to have produced the sword from his trousers and raise it above his head.

Police who were called in found the weapon behind Gilpin’s fridge. He claimed he only took the sheath of the sword outside.

Nadeem Aullybocus, defending, said his remorseful client had struggled with drugs in the past. But the court heard he was dealing with issues and has been providing negative drug tests.
