- Steve HILL postsport@b-nm.co.uk

MAX Tryfonos’ unbeaten 100 from only 72 balls (eight fours, two sixes) just failed to give Bedminster victory in a thrilling ECB National Club Championship clash at St Fagans.

The visitors were originally chasing 240 to win, Tryfonos capturing 2-21 from eight overs, before the rain rolled in.

That meant Bedminster were set a reduced target of 181 from 25 overs, and they almost got there thanks to Tryfonos’ fine effort in challenging conditions.

Clevedon, meanwhile, will on Sunday make a second attempt to complete their clash with Swansea after rain forced play to be abandoned with the North Somerset hosts at 115-4 off 25 overs. Play at Dial Hill will start at 1pm.

The Stuart Canvas Gloucestershire Cup gets under way on Sunday with a first-round clash between Bradley Stoke and Hatherley & Reddings (1pm).

Golden Hill begin their defence of the trophy away to WEPL league rivals Bristol, date to be arranged. Full draw: Thornbury v Tewkesbury, Painswick v Stroud, Twyford House v Bedminster, Bristol v Golden Hill, Charlton Kings v Frocester, Bishopston v

Rockhampton, Cheltenham v Gloucester, Bradley Stoke v Hatherley & Reddings.

Also on Sunday, Corse & Staunton will bid to follow up their excellent win at Frocester when they host Rockhampton in the Gloucestershire semi-finals of the Voneus Village Cup (1pm). The winners will be away to Kingsholm or Marshfield who also meet on Sunday.

It’s also a busy day of WEPL T20 triangular action. Bedminster will play host to Bristol at 10.30am ahead of Bristol taking on Golden Hill at 1.30pm with Bedminster then due to meet Golden Hill at about 4.30pm. Taunton St Andrews host Keynsham at 10.30am before it’s Winterbourne v Keynsham at 1.30pm with the final clash between Saints and Winterbourne at about 4.30pm.

In Group Ten, Painswick overcame Frocester by nine wickets at Pounds Close before the rain rolled in.

The two remaining matches in this pool will now take place on Sunday at Thornbury who go faceto-face with Painswick at 10.30am ahead of entertaining Frocester at 1.30pm. The 12 group winners will eventually be whittled down to one qualifier for the area final stage of this national ECB event.
