Throwers in fine form as Avon win opening league match

BRISTOL & West AC’s throwers played a key role in a thumping victory for Team Avon in the opening UK Youth Developmen­t League Midland Division Premier South West Upper Age match at Yate.

Josh Schrijver opened a busy weekend with wins in the under-20 men’s discus and shot, a double he repeated 48 hours later at the Brewer Games in Cheltenham. Schrijver is top of the South West Rankings in both events and 13th and 10th, respective­ly, in the UK.

Owen Garrett was even busier in the under-17s age group, winning the B competitio­ns in the discus, throwing a PB of 41.43m, shot and javelin. He then tackled all three events in the Brewer Games, winning the shot and discus and placing second in the javelin with 43.94, just four centimetre­s off his PB.

Additional­ly, Moni Brady was runner-up in the under-20s shot and discus, plus third in the javelin, while in her first competitio­n of the year, Maja Kupiec won the U17s discus and Safiya Willams was second in the U17s shot.

England Schools internatio­nal Nyree Perry won the U17s pole vault, with Sophie Hornung securing a double success, while Eleni Francis and Lily Bailey matched that in the U20s long jump. Ethan Canning narrowly missed his PB to finish second in the U17 men’s long jump.

In her first season with B&W and working with coach Paul Weston, Rosa May won the U20s triple jump, while in the U20 men’s event there was a super winning PB of 13.81m for Destiny Sadiku to go top of the West Rankings and eighth in the UK.

In the sprints, Ella Bowell clocked season’s bests to win the U20s 200m and 100B races, while Ryan Brady was third in the U20 men’s 100m and 200m.

Eleanor McIntosh, who is coached by Nick Harris, won the U17 women’s 300m in a PB of 41.45secs, with Holly Sanigar winning the B race and also claiming maximum points in the 800m, having clocked a PB of 2:15.08 at Exeter last week.

Patrick Kyle went third in the SW Rankings with victory in the U20 men’s B110m hurdles, having won the Gloucester­shire senior men’s title the previous day in 15.2secs.

In the middle distances, there were good runs by Ishmael Bradley, Nicholas Pestell, Oliver Draper, Amelia Honor and Molly Thomas, who ran a PB in the U20s 3000m. » Mayalee Osola finished third in the U20 women’s heptathlon at the Somerset Championsh­ips at Yeovil with a personal best score of 4,614 points. Of the seven discipline­s, Osola recorded five PBs in the 100m hurdles (14.58secs), high jump (1.58m), long jump (5.37m), shot (4k, 9.34m) and javelin (600G, 29.89m).

» In his first 5000m of the season, Kurt Taylor clocked 14mins 12.78secs at the Battersea Park Comeback meeting, with clubmate Jack Millar running 14:37.81.

» There was an amazing personal best for Bristol & West AC’s Kate Maltby at the England Athletics 5k Road Championsh­ips in Cheshire

last weekend. Maltby, who is now racing as a veteran over 35, finished fifth in 16:07 to shave one seconds off the time she set in Germany six years ago.

» B&W’s Ben Robinson had a busy Bank Holiday weekend. On Saturday, he won the Gloucester­shire 5000m title (15:21.0) and on Monday he romped to victory by more than a minute (31:49) in the Glastonbur­y 10k, with club-mate Matthew Robinson 10th (35:46) and first veteran. Pete Mountain (43:36) was fourth M60.

» Racing the Cardiff 5k, B&W M40 veteran Owain Jones finished 44th in 15mins 30secs, with club-mate David Awde 67th in 15:50.

» Good luck to Elaina Gard this weekend as she will be representi­ng Great Britain in the 30-34 age group at the World Triathlon Long Distance Championsh­ips in Ibiza.
