How to have your say on new board

MONOPOLY fans will soon be able to “Pass Go” on a special board filled with Bristol landmarks. It has been revealed that the city has been chosen to get a new edition of the world-famous board game.

In 2000 Bristol first landed its own board, but it was discontinued several years ago. But now the city is getting another chance to have the best of Bristol featured on a special new board.

The new game is being released to celebrate the 650th anniversary of Bristol being granted independent county status. From the Norman ruins of Bristol Castle to the modern city of food and culture of today, the board will embrace Bristol’s history and heritage.

This time round however, the people of Bristol will get to decide what landmarks make it into the game.

In the previous game Anchor Road was ‘Mayfair’ and Temple Street ‘Old Kent Road’ respectively the most expensive and most affordable squares in the game. But that could all change this time round.

The property sets will be themed in genres. From heritage to tourism, hotels to shopping, business to charity. There may even be a street art set - unique on any Monopoly board anywhere in the world in recognition of Bristol’s thriving art culture.

Landmarks that are expected to be heavily nominated to feature in the game include the Clifton Suspension Bridge, both football clubs, the University of Bristol and M Shed. Bristol charities will also be represented.

The Chance and Community Chest cards for the familyfriendly game will also be customised.

And one may even send players to Somerset rather than to jail.

The game, which is being produced by London-based games company Winning Moves UK, is expected to be available to buy in November 2023 in time for Christmas.

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees said: “This year Bristol marks the 650th anniversary of being granted county status by the then monarch, King Edward III. We can’t wait for this new edition of the world’s most famous board game to be released, helping celebrate our great city.”
