Saints edge out Ashley to boost championsh­ip charge

SAINTS Old Boys stayed on course to win the Downs League Division One title with a 2-1 victory against Ashley.

Goals from Braidie Cole and Jason Tomlin put Saints eight points ahead of second-placed Torpedo, after they were held to a goalless draw by Portland OB.

Third-placed Sporting Greyhounds, with three games in hand on the leaders, had goals from William Edgecombe and Ian Ridgeway in a 2-0 success against Clifton St Vincents.

Jake Meadows scored both the goals for Sporting Turin in a 2-1 triumph against Retainers.

The Division Two title race looks wide open still, but Sneyd Park Reserves lead the way for now following a 4-1 win against NCSF United, in which Nigel Halligan struck twice.

Torpedo Reserves, three points behind with a game in hand, won 2-1 against Saints OB Reserves, who dropped to third as a consequenc­e.

Fourth-placed Durdham Down AS won 4-3 against Sporting

Greyhound Reserves to remain in the hunt for honours.

Old Cliftonian­s drew 1-1 with Clifton St Vincents Reserves, while it finished goalless between Phoenix Downs and Evergreen Athletic.

In Division Three, Torpedo A beat Sneyd Park A 4-1 to leapfrog them into second place. Bengal Tigers drew 1-1 with bottom side Ashley Reserves, and it also finished 1-1 between Easton Cowboys B and Clifton St Vincents A.

Jasper Stokes-Johnson competed a hat-trick as Portland OB Reserves defeated Helios 7-1.

Saints OB B lead Division Four by one point after being held to a 2-2 draw by Portland OB A.

Second-placed Retainers Reserves lost 2-1 against NCSF United Reserves, while third-placed Sneyd Park B had two goals apiece from Philip Cornelius and Serafin Diaz Johnson in a 5-0 win against Clifton St Vincents B and beat them 2-0 in the other game of a double header. Torpedo B overcame Saints OB C 1-0.
