Asda ‘angel’ praised after saving customer’s life

-

A SHOP assistant who has worked at Asda for 21 years used her first aid training to save a customer who stopped breathing.

Sue Hill, 54, works in the Asda pharmacy at the Longwell Green store, but learned first aid during her time as a school lunchtime assistant.

Colleagues are calling Sue “an angel in disguise” after she recently rushed to perform CPR on the 92-year-old customer and stayed with him in the store until the paramedics arrived. They have since been informed that the man who collapsed is doing well in the Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and having some tests carried out.

While a member of the public called 999, Sue immediately started to carry out CPR and, after a few compressions, got the man breathing again. She talked to him and waited for paramedics with the support of an off-duty nurse.

Sue said: “I didn’t think about it, the adrenalin just kicked in and I did what I had to do. It was such a relief when he started breathing again. It was very shallow at first then got a little better.

“We got him some blankets and just kept talking to him to keep him conscious. He was a bit confused but was talking a little and said he’d had a heart attack previously.

“We just kept chatting to him about his family and then we got his phone and contacted his daughter, who came to the store. I’d done first aid training when I was a school dinner lady so it all came back to me.

“His daughter came in the next day to thank us and to say her father was having tests as it was heart related. She was very grateful for what we did.”

Asda customer trading manager Tina Lawrence said: “Sue stayed calm and reassuring throughout. She did an amazing job. She is an angel in disguise. Well done and thank you for such an amazing job, everyone is proud of you.”
