Archaeology faces hard times and decisions, as Neil Redfern explains overleaf. The Council for British Archaeology, a charity, has taken an instant hit, and your thinner magazine is part of the response.
Cultural institutions and activities may for a moment seem luxuries. But they are central to what we, as humans, live for and to why we are here. This is a time to reflect on the importance of heritage, and on the reasons we study the ancient past. What needs to change, and how will archaeologists contribute to a new society? This is a positive project in which we can all engage. Archaeology, and this magazine, will return with new strength.
In the meantime, British Archaeology will continue to bring you the best stories and writing that the field has to offer. In the pages ahead you will find some fascinating reading. And, I hope, some hints of an exciting future.
