A BURTON couple worried they would never get their dream of a family have finally welcomed their “bundle of joy” into their lives.
Faye Nixon and husband Adam were newly married when they decided to expand their family, but after a year of trying, they had no luck.
Now Faye has told of her journey to becoming a mum and why she will always be grateful to the staff at the fertility clinic who helped her conceive son Leyton.
Faye, 30, said: “I still can’t believe I am a mum.
“It’s been a rollercoaster and I was living on hope, but miracles do happen. When we first got married we talked a lot about having a baby.
“We were trying for about a year and because nothing was happening we went to the GP and spoke about our concerns.
“They couldn’t find anything wrong with us, but because we didn’t have any children they were happy to help.
“It got to the point where I honestly thought I couldn’t have a baby.
“Lots of my friends have babies and so do the people I work with.
“I was always happy for them but I just thought I’d never have that.”
The Stretton couple sought help from Nurture Fertility in Burton and were offered IVF last March. Nursery nurse Faye says she and Adam, 29, had to discuss the gruelling process, but already knew what they wanted.
She said: “We had a holiday booked in June and it was a lot to think about because it’s a gruelling process, so we started in July. At the end of the day we really wanted a baby so it was a straight ‘yes.’
“We went for it. I needed injections daily and then it doubled to twice a day. It was hard and I was very emotional.
“Adam kept me going and was really positive when I had down days. He’d say ‘remember why we’re doing this.’
“I also had a mini-operation so the doctors could collect my eggs. They collected 15 and then it was a waiting game to see how many survived.
“We had 12 survive and they were graded. The one with the highest grade was the one that was implanted.”
Faye said the hardest part was waiting to see if the treatment had been successful. She said: “We had to wait two weeks until we could do a pregnancy test and it felt like such a roller
coaster. It was really up and down because I was getting symptoms and felt sick, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.
“In the back of my mind I was scared it wouldn’t be the news we wanted.
“I’m very lucky I had Adam and lots of family support.
“As a couple you have to be open and strong, because it can put a strain on you.”
Faye and Adam found out they were expecting and even the fact it was during lockdown could not dampen their happiness.
Faye said: “It was hard during lockdown. I had scans cancelled because of coronavirus and I had to go and see my midwife at Burton Albion’s stadium, which was unusual.
“I also couldn’t have a baby shower and my mum wasn’t able to be at the labour, which is something we both always dreamed of.”
On June 5, Faye and Adam welcomed Leyton, who weighed 6lb 9oz.
Faye said: “He is our bundle of joy. The team at Burton hospital were amazing with everything that’s going on and I can’t thank them enough.
“He is just a dream. I cannot believe I am finally a mum.”
The new parents want to offer hope to others going down the IVF route and say they would not have their family without the help and support of the team at the fertility clinic.
Faye said: “Without them, Leyton wouldn’t be here.
“I know people out there have tried for years and not been lucky, but I just want to say to them ‘don’t give up; miracles do happen and it is worth it all.’”
