BURTON continues to be monitored closely as extra measures put in place to stop the spread of coronavirus “appear to be working”.

Staffordshire County Council has previously warned that Burton risked being put into a local lockdown if it could not get the spread of the virus under control.

It came after an outbreak was reported in the Anglesey, Shobnall, Horninglow and Eton Park areas of the town.

Extra measures were then put in place in these areas, including a warning that spot checks would be carried out on those who were selfisolating.

However, the council has now said that with the support of the people in these areas, the new measures are working as the number of weekly cases has not continued to rise.

The latest figures from July 4, revealed that in the whole of East Staffordshire there have been 294 cases.

Of this total, 236 cases were in Burton, including 152 in the outbreak areas.

In the seven days between September 21 and 27, there were 32 new cases in East Staffordshire, 19 in Burton and 10 in the outbreak areas.

Dr Johnny Mcmahon, the council’s cabinet member for health, care and wellbeing, said: “The Burton extra measures were put in place to help stop the rise in cases in the four wards.

“Thanks to the fantastic support of local people, they appear to be working as the number of weekly cases has not continued to rise.

“The new national measures have effectively caught up with much of our Burton extra advice.

“However, we continue to ask now that if people avoid meeting with other households, either at home or when out, and if they do they limit this to once a week.

“We are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

“We can’t afford to let our guard down now, so our message to everyone in these affected areas is please continue to stick to the rules as this is the best way to protect yourself, your family and your local community.”
