POLICE are searching for a blue Audi after an elderly couple was targeted by a “plausible” woman fraudster dressed as a nurse in an East Staffordshire village.

The couple were first called the day before by someone claiming to be a community nurse who said they needed to arrange a visit about a long-standing medical condition.

On Friday, October 2, a woman dressed as a nurse arrived at the house in Barton under Needwood and attempted to sell them medical aids and equipment totalling £2,800.

The woman drove off from the house in a blue Audi with a 10-plate registration number. The residents became suspicious of the bogus official and no money was taken.

However, a spokesman for Staffordshire Police said she was a “very plausible, smartly dressed nurse” as they warned others to make their elderly and vulnerable family and friends aware of this scam.

The spokesman said: “An elderly couple living in Barton under Needwood have been visited by a bogus official.

“The day previously, they received a call from “The Health Centre” saying a community nurse needed to visit them, regarding a longstanding medical condition of one of the occupants.

“On Friday, a very plausible, smartly dressed nurse arrived as arranged this female attempted to sell them medical aids/equipment totally £2,800.

“Thankfully the residents became very suspicious and the female offender drove off in a 10-plate registration blue Audi.

“No money was taken. However, the female was very plausible and looked like a smartly addressed nurse.

“Please make any of your elderly or vulnerable family or friends aware of this scam. “Here at Staffordshire Police we work hard to prevent and detect such crimes and working together we can help reduce such crimes. “Should you be visited by such an offender, or any suspicious bogus official please dial 999 if the incident is occurring, or any information about the above please message us on East Staffs Police FB page via messenger quoting incident 125 of October 2, 2020.”

A warning had previously been sent to all patients of the Barton Family Practice to say they were not arranging for nurses to go out to people’s homes for a medical check.
