Plymouth searching for ways to score more

-

WHILE Burton Albion are struggling to keep the ball out of their own net, tomorrow’s opponents Plymouth Argyle have the opposite problem after failing to score in their last two game.

Argyle lost 2-0 away to Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday and 1-0 away to Hull City in League One last Saturday.

Now manager Ryan Lowe says he will be “tweaking one or two things” to try to get his team back on the goal trail.

Against Hull, they were thwarted by determined defending as they put the home team under a lot of second-half pressure.

Against Cheltenham, Ryan Hardie could not convert any of three excellent chances, including two one-onones with keeper Scott Flinders.

His strike partner, Dom Telford, also fired wide from a good position.

“We know that’s what wins you the games, putting the ball in the opposition net,” said Lowe, who led Argyle to promotion from League Two last season.

“Against Hull there was some good defending but Tuesday was a little bit different. We should have scored a lot of goals.

“What we have got to do now is find a solution to how we put the ball in the back of the net – different areas, different crosses – and we will certainly be working on that.

“We are getting the chances, which is the main thing. If you are getting no chances then it’s a worry.

“When you are getting them, it’s about tweaking one or two things and, hopefully, we can score more goals than we have done.

“We don’t look to go out and say ‘we are going to beat teams three, four or five-nil.’ What we do is go in with a game plan and hopefully win it. If that brings you two, three, four goals then so be it, but ultimately it’s about winning a game of football.”

Overall, Argyle have scored 13 goals in eight games in three different competitions, with Conor Grant and Telford leading the way on two apiece.
